Happy Groundhog Day!
Six more weeks of Winter! I really don’t know if I can handle it! I know that other Beef Ambassadors have it worse in Nebraska and Wyoming but this East Texas girl is struggling with the frigid wind in Lubbock! For farmers and ranchers across the Nation this means six more weeks of hard labor.
Farming is a year-round, full-time job. Even when the fields are buried under 12 inches of snow, there is plenty to keep a farm family busy.
Just about everything takes longer in the winter, and there are additional tasks to ensure the animals are kept warm and healthy — like keeping waterers from freezing, and plowing snow. America’s farmers and ranchers are committed to growing a quality product but in the process, they are dedicated to giving their animals the best care possible.
I can’t count how many times I woke up before school in the freezing cold-rainy dark weather to break up ice for the cattle and put out extra bales of hay at night to insure that my animals had access to everything they needed.
“Caring for animals is a family tradition handed down and improved upon from generation to generation.”- explorebeef.org
So as you enjoy beef this winter don’t forget that farmers and ranchers put a lot of care and dedication into the steak you’re eating! Animal care is a very important aspect of beef production and we continue to improve our practices.
Happy cow trails to you until we meet again,
Mandy-Jo
